Gao Ling was born on March 14, 1979, in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and is considered by many as the most successful doubles player in the history of women's badminton. She earned a total of nine medals which includes four gold medals at the BWF World Championships. She and her partner Zhang June gold medal under-the mixed doubles twice in a row at the Olympics in 2000 and 2004.

Gao Ling won a total of four gold medals in the Olympic badminton most as female badminton athletes. He also won the women's doubles title six consecutive times at the All England Championships from 2001 to 2006. Gao Ling is a founding member of the world champion Chinese Uber Cup team since 2000.
